Children are timetabled to have one period every week in the library
where they can choose and borrow books for up to two weeks. Students are
exposed to the following during these sessions:
• Locating picture, fiction and information books with assistance
from the teacher and/or librarian. Students are encouraged to be more
independent when locating books by using the library computer catalogue.
• Basic knowledge of searching the library catalogue. Students
will practice searching by keyword, title, subject and author and begin
to interpret the information found. Students will then move on to the
effective location of resources from the shelves.
• Library lessons links with PYP topics through research projects
and lessons. Based on the Big Six, children will be exposed to the different
steps that should be followed when researching any topic. Discussions
with grade teams facilitate the link between the library and the classroom
at the beginning of each topic.
• Appreciation of literature through storytelling, often linked
to PYP topics. Activities related to the literature studied are used to
further enhance this.
• Reinforcement of the importance of following certain rules and
procedures in the library in order to maintain the library for the enjoyment
of the elementary school. |
