Grade 4 Courses: Mathematics

PYP Math is followed throughout the elementary school. Teachers use a variety of resources and mathematic schemes in their planning and teaching. The emphasis is on learning mathematics through practical activities, discussion and application. The children will be encouraged to achieve their potential.

The main areas covered will be:
Number - understanding number and place value to millions, decimals to the tenths place, multiplication and division facts 1-12, addition and subtraction using 6 digits, multiplication of a multi-digit number by a 2 digit number, division of a milti-digit number by a 1 digit number, fractions and decimals, estimation and problem solving.
Pattern and Function - creating number patterns, understanding and using multiplication and division as inverse functions.
Measurement - using standard units (kilometres/metre/centimeter/millimeter, kilo/grams, litre/mls., centigrade) to estimate and measure length/perimeter, mass, area, volume and temperature, reading time to the nearest minute.
Data Handling - designing surveys and presenting information in a variety of ways, identifying and applying essential features of a graph.
Shape and Space - describing triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons, building 3- D shapes, angles, line and symmetry, position on a grid or map.
