Middle School Course Descriptions
Grade 6 : Physical Education

GRADES 6, 7 AND 8

In order to ensure a smooth transition to Middle School, students undertake a physical education programme designed to further promote the skills they have acquired in previous years. As a continuation from Grade 5, it is the aim of the physical education staff to promote fitness, teamwork, movement skills and a healthy attitude towards physical education at OFS.

Students will also be given the opportunity to participate in various sporting leagues, competitions and tournaments in a range of sports.

Games And Activities Include:

Movement Skills:

  • Development of the co-ordination involved in ball games.
  • Examples of skills are throwing, catching, hitting, kicking, speed, agility, flexibility, balance and tactics.
  • The games we teach are soccer, volleyball, cricket, softball, street hockey, basketball and touch rugby.

Swimming:

  • The acquisition of water safety and the swimming skills to enjoy water based activities.

Health and Fitness:

  • The objective is to promote life-long fitness skills and an appreciation of a healthy lifestyle. This is taught in each of the units, as sports specific fitness is essential for the development of skills.

 

HEALTH & SOCIAL EDUCATION

GRADES 6, 7 AND 8
Students study these four themes during selected extended homebase periods, one per quarter: Getting to know you (Quarter 1), Growing up, Healthy Mind and Body, and Relationships. The content is age appropriate and is viewable on the password protected middle school subject area websites.
