Middle School Course Descriptions
Grade 8 : Languages A - English

The use of Language A English is essential across all subject areas, and so develops
the six key communication skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and
presenting. Students explore different topics in each unit of study and practice both
creative and analytical expression. The main objective of this subject is to help
students gain an understanding of the power of language, its uses and its complexities.

Students read a variety of texts in both fiction and non-fiction and are expected to
develop their own personal, independent reading habits. They also study grammar,
poetry, plays, advertising, films and visual displays.

The main focus of each grade is given below, as well as an outline of anticipated
units.
