High School Curriculum
Junior High School (Grade 9 & 10)

In the mainstream classes of the Junior High School, our curriculum is based on two International programmes.

The IB Middle Years Programme, which is internally assessed and externally moderated by the International Baccalaureate Organisation.
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education, which is externally assessed and examination based.

These programmes are complementary and both provide international qualifications at the end of Grade 10. All students are involved in both programmes.

Senior High School (Grade 11 & 12)

In the mainstream classes of the Senior High School, our curriculum is based on three types of courses:

International Baccalaureate higher level courses (IBH)
International Baccalaureate standard level courses (IBS)
Non IB courses (Course designed by OFS teachers)

Students can select any combination of these courses (subject to timetable & IBO restrictions) within the OFS Diploma.

A certain combination of IB courses, chosen in grade 11, leads to the additional award of an IB Diploma. This is the most rigorous programme in the Senior High School.

Graduation from the High School enables a student to enter universities in many parts of the world.

Study Preparation Programme (SPP)

This programme operates in grades 9-12 and is designed for students whose first language is not English and who require intensive assistance with their English prior to entering mainstream classes.

SPP aims to equip students with the necessary English, study skills and work habits to be successful in the mainstream. The programme endeavours to improve, systematically, student competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing English. It encourages students to take increasing responsibility for their learning as they progress.

The programme is designed to phase students gradually into the mainstream curricula. Classes are divided into three levels of ability: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Each level runs for a semester. To complete the programme would normally take students 18 months if they enter at level 1, 12 months if they enter at Level 2 and only six months if they enter at Level 3.

Although the vast majority of students graduate from the programme within the times specified above, progression is not automatic. Students who fail to meet requirements may spend longer at one, or more, of the levels. It is also possible to graduate from the programme in less than 18 months, depending on the student’s English capabilities.

The programme is staffed by English as a Second Language Specialists who teach English, Humanities [History, Geography, Economics], Science, Communications and Mathematics.

Graduation from High School

All students in grades 9-12 earn credits for completing courses. A minimum of 22 credits needs to be earned in grades 9-12 in order to graduate. This normally occurs at the end of grade 12 with the award of the OFS High School Diploma.

Features of the OFS Diploma

This diploma programme is accredited by an outside body (WASC) and is recognised around the world.
It shows that a student has satisfactorily completed grade 12 and is ready to enter tertiary education.
It is a qualification for university entrance in many parts of the world.
