Maths Matters

Dear Parents,

This is my third year as a mathematics specialist for grades 1, 2, and 3 at the Overseas Family School.  My role is varied and interesting.  While I work in a limited way with grade 1 students, I am teaching a grade 2 set and a grade 3 set.  This allows me to experience the maths curriculum firsthand with students.  Teachers and I are review various aspects of our program with the aim of enhancing what it is we do to help our students develop greater understanding of mathematical concepts and strengthen their application of skills.

As often as is possible, I try to make hands-on and real life connections with my students as they work mathematically.  Making connections is important as the students learn to communicate and apply what they know.  Our in-class discussions often reveal what it is that children are thinking.   I encourage you to talk with your child about maths in its varied contexts that relate to events both in and out of school and to ask questions that allow them to express their understanding of the concepts they are learning.

You can also play a role in supporting your child’s in school work.  Please ensure that your child has appropriate tools for maths activities:  sharpened pencils, eraser, ruler, scissors, glue stick and calculator for each class session.  Please help your child understand the homework instructions by discussing them together before your child attempts the homework.  Also, please check over the homework to ensure that it was completed, and that it was reasonably accurate.
