Students are introduced to the foundation skills and concepts required for Middle
School Drama. Practical, design and written activities provide opportunity for
exploration of themes, self expression and a basic understanding of performance
skills. Cooperative group work and evaluative reflection are key concepts of the
course.
GRADE 6 DRAMA
The Grade 6 curriculum is made up of the following mandatory units and a number of smaller optional units.
1. Basic performance skills:
- Concentration, team work
- Voice
- Body
- Character development
- Staging and blocking
- Group performance and soliloquy
- Developmental workbook- reflection and evaluation
2. Improvisation
- Rules, space-jump, tag
- Text as stimulus
- Objects as stimulus
- Words and titles
- Scenarios (exposition, rising tension, climax and resolution)
- Practical assessment
3. Theatre of the World
- Introduction to theatre innovations from around the world; Greece, Korea, India, Japan, Indonesia, China
- Research project and presentation
- Script writing of an ancient myth and group performance
4. Mime, Movement and Tableau
- Mime- precision, object and character
- Movement- character, emotions, objectives and moving with masks
- Tableau- freeze frames
- Group performance
- Developmental workbook- reflection and evaluation
Additional units
Where time is available small units, taken from the list below, will be introduced :
• Simple script writing and performance, for example “Alphabet Scripts”
• Polished improvisation based on a given theme or containing given elements
• Exploration of a theme, subject or concept through improvisation
• Basic Theatre/Drama vocabulary quizzes
• Script comprehension
• Costume design
