In grades 6 and 10 students are taught within the framework
of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme.
| What is the
Middle Years Programme? |
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organisation
(IBO) is a course of study designed to meet the educational requirements
of students in the 11-16 age range. This is a holistic programme concerned
with developing intercultural awareness and strong communication skills
within a framework of interrelated disciplines. The Middle School teaches the first three years (in grades 9 and 10) and the High School the final two years of the five
year Middle Years Programme.
The IBO has set the aims and objectives for eight different Curriculum
Areas. These areas are:
| • |
Language A (Usually the school’s
language of instruction) |
| • |
Language B (A modern foreign language learned at
school) |
| • |
Technology (The nature, processes and impact of
Technology) |
| • |
Humanities (History, Geography) |
| • |
Physical Education (a healthy, active lifestyle,
optimal fitness, social skills and reflection) |
| • |
Sciences (General Science, Biology, Chemistry and
Physics) |
| • |
Arts (Music, Art/Design, Drama) |
| • |
Mathematics |
At Overseas Family School, in grades 9 and 10, we use either IGCSE syllabi or courses developed by OFS teachers to meet these aims and objectives.
A feature of the MYP is that students, mostly through their selected courses
and whole school activities, will experience five common themes. These
are called Areas of Interaction. They bind the various disciplines together.
The five areas are:
| • |
Approaches to Learning
Developing effective ways to think, learn, reflect and communicate. |
| • |
Community and Service
Developing awareness, involvement, service and reflection. |
| • |
Health and Social Education
Developing complete and healthy lives through physical, social and
emotional health and intelligence. |
| • |
Environments
Developing awareness of and responsibility for personal, local and
global issues, including elements of action and reflection. |
| • |
Human Ingenuity
The evolution, processes and products of human creativity. |

| The
Personal Project (Grade 10) |
This is another unique characteristic of the MYP.
The Areas of Interaction are central to its completion.
It is a significant body of work produced over an extended period, towards
the end of the five year programme (during grade 10).
Students may select their own topic or theme - one about which they are
enthusiastic - and must show commitment to the completion of their own
project, which will be in their own time.
The project can take many forms. For example: an original piece of art,
a piece of literary fiction, an original Science experiment, an invention,
a written piece of work on a special topic.
An exhibition of completed Personal Projects takes place in November every
year.
