Grade 5 Math Newsletter

August 2008

Dear Parents,

During the first semester, the fifth graders will be reviewing and studying the math strands entitled Number and Operations and Measurement. For the first, the students will develop and use strategies to estimate the results of whole number computations, judge the reasonableness of their results, and increase their fluency in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers. For the second strand, the focus will be on their ability to to carry out simple unit conversions from one metric unit to another, select and apply appropriate standard units and tools to measure length, area, volume, weight, time and temperature. The process of problem solving will be monitored and reflected on throughout the units.

MENTAL MATHS

Each week, time is spent practicing mental maths, or learning new mental maths strategies. Eg:
Times tables and division facts
Multiplying whole numbers by 10, 100 and 1000
Dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 (so there are no remainders eg 530 ÷ 10 or 4000 ÷ 100)
Multiplying by multiples of 10 and 100 eg 40 x 30, 500 x 70, 700 x 900
Addition and subtraction of units and tenths eg 7.8 + 1.3
Using doubling and halving to multiply: Eg 18 x 5 = 9 x 10. 450 x 4 = 900 x 2

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR MATHS CLASSES

Children should bring all equipment to every maths lesson:

* math workbook(s) pen, pencil, ruler

*glue, eraser

*a calculator

*protractor & compass (when working on angles)
