Model United Nations (MUN), is a simulation in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. MUN is now fully embedded into the Grade Five program in the Elementary School.
The students researched the United Nations (UN) as an organisation and took on the role of a delegate. Each homebase class had a designated country focus and a variety of issues were then taken to committee rooms for discussion. The issues were based on the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs) established by the UN in 2015. They ranged from free immunisation for children to the banning of plastic bags for our land and oceans.
The culmination of the program was the MUN General Assembly on 14th and 15th November, where delegates shared amended issue statements and voted based on their country's priorities. A variety of personal skills were developed throughout this unit, as students learnt to lobby, negotiate and understand the perspective of others. It was wonderful to witness these skills in action as students discussed current global issues.
