On Friday 15th March, students, teachers and parents attended the 2019 Grade 4 MUN General Assembly. It was here that they voted on resolutions that were drafted in Committees. This completed the students first full experience of the Model United Nations program at OFS and built a strong basis for continuing on with MUN in Grade 5 and beyond.
Model United Nations (MUN), is a simulation in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. This year the Grade 4 students learnt about world trade and globalisation, through their Unit of Work, Going Global. In this unit, they looked at what we buy and consume. They learned that our choices can have a profound impact on the lives and societies of people around the world. As delegates, they then looked deeper into four issues related to food; Food Wastage, Fair Trade, Genetically-Modified food and Sugar-High products.
Most students had the opportunity during the program to represent and take on the perspective of a country that is not their own. They represented that country in a Committee Room based around one of the food issues. Students modelled behaviours such as; being well organised, good thinkers and communicators in both Committee and Country rooms. They also developed some diplomacy skills as they shared their country's perspective and tried to persuade other delegates to their way of thinking.
