The 13th Middle Years Model United Nations conference at Overseas Family School - known as MY-MUNOFS XIII - took place in late February for the first time in person since 2019. More than 400 students from over 20 schools were involved in discussions on topics linked to solving territorial disputes, combating drug-trafficking networks, mitigating climate change, upholding human rights and addressing the legacy of colonialism. Students travelled from India, Cambodia and Malaysia to attend the conference.
During the Opening Ceremony, students were welcomed by Mr. Lee, Middle School Principal; encouraged by our High School MUN Secretary-General Vivaan Kapoor; and inspired and informed by our guest speaker Raffaello Pantucci, Senior Fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, author and career think-tank professional, who address the more pressing current security threats facing our world. He provided much food for thought for all the delegates before they went into their committees to devise practical and sustainable solutions to a host of issues.
Here are some highlights from MY-MUNOFS XIII, which was a roaring success for over 400 Middle School students. Students from over 20 schools actively debated the many topics offered in the ten onsite and two online committees. They learned to negotiate, listen, persuade, collaborate, and understand complex global issues from different perspectives. Model United Nations is students led, and the High School MUN Executive Team ran the conference, while delegates were expertly chaired by High School students from OFS, as well as UWCSEA East, St. Joseph's Institution International, Nexus, and the American International School - Chennai. Chairing younger delegates - and some first-time delegates - our chairs developed their mentoring skills as they introduced a new generation to the wonderful world of MUN.
